Treating Children and Teens with AD/HD:  A Multi-Modality Approach - Part I

November 2008

Dear Parents,

AD/HD is an important issue, one which affects many families and whose issues are addressed by many different types of professionals. In the search for the "perfect treatment" it is easy to become confused about the best way to help ourselves or our family members with AD/HD.

Scientific research, as well as our own professional and personal experience, has taught us two important lessons that we wish to share with you.  Firstly, effective treatment should not be limited to one method; a multi-modality (combination) approach usually works best. Secondly, not all treatment approaches are good for everyone; so what works for one child will not work for another.

This newsletter focuses on information about traditional approaches to AD/HD, while our next newsletter will focus on alternative methods of treatment. We hope that giving you an overview of both conventional and complementary treatments for AD/HD, will help you find the multi-modality approach that is right for you.

Best wishes,

Gayle and Esther

AD/HD Homework Tips:

1. Schedule physical activity such as sports or exercise right before sit-down homework time.  Physical activity stimulates the brain so that afterwards, kids with AD/HD are often able to concentrate better on schoolwork.

2. Plan short homework sessions with frequent breaks. Schedule in a supper break, a basketball break, or a household errand.  The main thing is - break it up before it breaks down!
