Partners with Parents Newsletter -
Advancing Children Through the Arts - May 2008

May 2008

Dear Friends,

About a week before Pesach I attended an international conference at Bar Ilan University entitled "Advancing Children through the Arts". It was a terrific day for me and I was so impressed with the presentations that I decided to dedicate this newsletter to the topic.

Allowing time for art, music and theater means that we choose to make room for beauty, serenity, laughter and joy in our otherwise hectic lives. When we choose to give arts education a central role in our children's schooling, it means that we recognize and appreciate its important place in child development.

We are often searching for alternative and successful ways to advance and educate our children, especially children with learning disabilities who do not enjoy learning through conventional methods. Research in arts education has shown that it improves children's social, emotional and cognitive abilities as well as literacy and mathematical achievements. It creates an educational opportunity which is “outside the box”.

In this newsletter we feature articles by a local artist, as well as a famous actor we all grew up with, “The Fonz”. I hope that their messages, together with articles featuring studies and programs about art education, will help you appreciate this important topic.

As this school year draws to a close, I encourage you to consider the importance of including arts education in your child's life, both during the summer vacation and in preparation for the new school year.

Best wishes,

Gayle

Use Summer Vacation Time!

During the taxing school year, many students, especially those with LD and AD/HD are too overwhelmed by schoolwork to develop artistic talents.  Summer vacation is a good time to introduce your child to the arts - music, art, dance and theatre, which they can then pursue as a chug during the school year.
